9 Tips for your Living Room According to Feng Shui

aThe living room represents the union of family and friends and the well-being of the local people. Therefore, it is an important place according to Feng Shui. It is fundamental that the living room be pleasant, cozy, and comfortable. It is a place to gather and connect with people. Currently, the living room is used not only to receive visitors, friends, and family, but also as a place to sit and relax, have a sip of wine, read a good book, or have a cup of tea. Gone are the days when the living room was just for visitors. Let's get to the tips:

  1. If, in your case, you don't use your living room much, the energy can stagnate there. Use your living room to meditate, relax, look at your cell phone messages, to have a cup of coffee; the important thing is to keep the Chi circulating.

  2. Command position: The command position in Feng Shui represents being protected, in control of life, and being able to see the opportunities that present themselves. When we are in the control position, we are more comfortable, focused, and confident. The couch and chairs must be in a command position. When sitting on the couch, you need to be able to see the entrance to the room, but not be directly in line with the entrance, if possible. Never place a couch with its back to the entrance door, as it will give the impression you do not want to receive people. The ideal furniture arrangement is in the shape of a “U”, what makes you feel embraced and welcome. If there is no other way and the couch needs to have its back to the front door, place a narrow console behind the couch with a lamp, a plant, and accessories to protect those who sit with their backs to the entrance. The command position is important, as well as the layout of the furniture.

  3. Pay attention to having a room with a light ambiance, with no clutter. If you have children who leave toys lying around, show them how to store their toys in a box after using them. Leave some space around the furniture so people can circulate easily. Tight and crowded places create obstacles and difficulties in people's lives.

  4. Fresh air is important in any environment. Open the window and let fresh air circulate, increasing the oxygen level. Live plants bring the power of nature into your home and create a healthy, positive atmosphere. Use peace lily, jade, peperomia, dracaena, bamboo, and lucky bamboo.

  5. Feng Shui uses the Theory of the 5 Elements of Nature (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) to maintain balance in the environment. More harmony, stability, and positive energy are created by balancing the 5 Elements. Here's how you can incorporate them:

Wood: use wooden furniture, natural plants, art that symbolizes the wood element (landscape, flowers), wood decor, rectangle shape, vertical lines, or the colors green and teal.

Fire: use light fixtures, candles, fireplace, animal print, leather, animal pictures, triangle, pyramid, or star shape and colors like red and orange.

Earth: use ceramic, porcelain, square shaped objects, earth colors, yellow, or blue.

Metal: use metal objects and/or furniture, rounded, spherical and arc shaped objects, metal colors, silver, gray, white, metal frames or pictures.

Water: Use a fountain or an aquarium, navy blue, black, glass, crystal or irregular shaped objects.

  6. A large mirror is always welcome and brings positive Chi. A mirror can give the impression of a larger and clearer environment. Check if the mirror is going to reflect a beautiful landscape or if it reflects something unwelcome like a cell phone antenna. Avoid mirrors that have cracks, chips, or a distorted image.

  7. Choose an elegant chandelier. A beautiful chandelier creates a pleasant atmosphere and brings auspicious Chi. Also, use table lamps when you want more cozy lighting. Dimmers help control the desired lighting for each occasion. Never leave burned out light bulbs.

  8. As for the colors: First, you must choose the color you like best so that you can bring good energy into the space. In Feng Shui, we can use colors according to the Bagua area or to the intention of what you want for the place. Earthy colors bring coziness and stability. Green brings the energy of wood, spring, and new beginnings. Blue and teal also bring the energy of wood and growth. Red and orange are associated with fire, and although they are appetite-stimulating colors, they should be used in moderation. Whites and grays are associated with metal, they bring focus and create a sterile environment, so they are not the most suitable colors in a living room environment. You can use white and off-white in a living room because they are more neutral colors, they bring a feeling of cleanliness and spaciousness, but fill in the decor (cushions, rug, objects) with other cheerful, vibrant, and cozy colors to bring life to the environment and to encourage communication among people.

  9. Avoid images or objects with a negative, sad or aggressive meaning. Use auspicious and cheerful frames and images.

Hope you enjoy the tips and let the Chi flow positively in your living room!
